Our unique bottle sorting plant at South Normanton in Derby, is the only plastic sorting facility in the UK capable of separating all polymers within a plastic bottle grade – by type and colour. With a capacity of 78,000 tonnes, we recycle HDPE, PET, polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and PVC waste collected from local authorities, large national supermarkets and small industrial businesses.
Our unique process …
Baled plastics are put through a rigourous sorting process, removing any contaminants such as paper and plastic bags. The remaining plastic material is divided by polymer type and colour using the industries most innovative optical sorting technology - TiTech – so sophisticated that it is able to divide HDPE and PET by colour into natural, blue tint, blue, green and mixed.
The technology analyses all plastics with a fast-moving scanning sensor fitted over the conveyor belt, which identifies materials, shapes, textures and colours as well as the object position in a split second. Once the relevant TiTech (there are 12 throughout the plant) has defined the plastic’s polymer type or colour, the plastic is blown onto the appropriate conveyor in a second transport system using high power air jets, while the non-plastic waste is delivered to a third belt for further sorting. The end product, having been sorted by colour and type, is rebaled. From here it will travel to our new facility in Worksop, where the material will under go various granulation and washing processes. The cleaned material will then be extruded into a pellet for resale into UK markets and used by ourselves at Loughborough.
